Additional things to do in Koh Phangan

Koh Phangan sits within the Gulf of Thailand between Koh Samui and Koh Tao and has a global reputation for being the go-to destination for Full Moon Parties for the past 20 years. The island offers some good snorkelling and diving spots, hiking opportunities such as trekking to the Khao Ra Mountain viewpoint or to one of the islands’ seven waterfalls, exploring via sea kayaks, and plenty of gorgeous beaches (more than 30!) with white soft sands and azure blue and emerald warm waters to unwind on.

    Full Moon Party

Koh Phangan has played host to the original and infamous Thailand Full Moon Party for over 20 years. These raucous festivities attract up to 30,000 partygoers each month flooding Haad Rin beach with booze, recreational substances, bodies and litter. Around the time of these parties, accommodation books up and most places require a 3-night minimum stay. The event has become iconic, as much as Thai food, perhaps, and one of the top things to do in Koh Phangan. Celebrations have spread to the other beaches beyond Haad Rin as well.

    Half Moon Party

Because one massive party each month is not enough! Half Moon parties happen in the middle of the jungle as opposed to being on the beach and are arranged by a private event company. These parties occur every two weeks, either side of when the moon is full. With three dance floors featuring different music styles and full lighting rigs, revellers can expect to hear progressive and psytrance music, along with techno, house and urban beats until sunrise. One side of the jungle has been set aside for parking and one can see cars and tuk-tuks and taxis dropping off and picking up travellers all night long!

    Khao Ra Mountain

Khao Ra Mountain can be hiked in about three hours with amazing views for the lookout. It’s the highest point on the island and 627 metres in height. There are excellent viewpoints all around the island – check out Haad Yao, Haad Rin, between Haad Mae Haad and Chaloklum Bay.

    Ang Thong Marine Park

Ang Thong Marine Park is a magnificent archipelago of 42 protected tropical islands, with less than an hour speedboat trip from Koh Phangan, making it the perfect distance for a full-day tour. Experience dramatic limestone karst islands, hidden lagoons with the most famous being the Emerald Lake, exquisitely clear turquoise waters and abundant marine life in almost 250 sq km of an aquatic paradise.

    Paradise Waterfall

Paradise Waterfall is a popular place to swing on ropes tied to overhanging trees, dive into the fresh waters and play in the rock pools. The main waterfall is an impressive cascade that you can reach in around a forty-minute trek.

    Phaeng Waterfall

The Phaeng Waterfall National Park boasts of two separate falls, one small and one much larger cascade. The small part of the waterfall is very close to the park entrance but to reach the larger falls you will need to trek a steep two hundred and fifty-metre hike. The area is within the lush jungle and very serene, ideal for a day’s yoga retreat activity. There’s a large pool at the base of the waterfall where you can cool off after your hike.

    Wang Sai Waterfall

Near Mae Haad Beach and Koh Ma island on the opposite side, you can get to this waterfall, said to have two “versions,” a natural one and a landscaped one, in a short trek through a jungle. The artificial landscaped part of the waterfall is a pool where swimming and bathing can be done any time of the year. In the area is a leisure centre with activities offered, like a zipline.

    Sramonora Waterfall

Sramonora hosts the legendary Koh Phangan waterfalls all-night parties just before and after the famous parties at Haad Rin. At night these falls glisten under the moonlight creating a truly breathtaking atmosphere. There are two rock pools, one large and one smaller. It’s a 500-metre walk from the car park through the jungle to the falls.

    Thong Sala Night Market

Welcome to the ultimate foodies’ paradise. Thong Sala is a traditional Thai night market serving a delicious array of local fresh delicacies and global dishes ready for your indulgence. In the top 3 of things to do at Koh Phangan is a visit to the Thong Sala Night Market, where food and every other thing you’d like to see for fun are!

    Yang Na Tree

This statuesque native tree is the tallest on the island, reaching close to 50 metres in height. It’s located close to Wat Pho temple in Baan Tai, and definitely worth visiting to admire nature’s majestic gift.

    Diving at Sail Rock

Sail Rock is about an hour’s boat ride from Koh Phangan and is quite a deep dive with some strong currents but with excellent visibility. Common sightings include colourful corals, vibrant schools of fish, manta rays, barracuda and the rare visits of whale sharks.

    Haad Rin

Koh Phangan has several beautiful white sand beaches. Haad Rin is the location of the full moon beach parties. But during the day, the beach has a range of things happening such as beach football, beach volleyball, and bikini contests, as well as water sports including jet skiing and sea kayaking.

    Baan Tai

Haad Rin’s quieter version- Baan Tai beach still has a very lively bar and beach club scene.

    Haad Salad Beaches

For those looking for a more laid-back stay, try Chalok Lam Beach, Mae Haad, Thong Sala, Haad Yao and Haad Salad. On one side of Haad Salad beach on Koh Phangan’s opposite side to Mae Haad is Koh Ma, a more preserved tiny island, connected by a sandbank at low tide.

    Thong Nai Pan Beach

Thong Nai Pan Beach is low-key but has waterfalls nearby, lush vegetation and lots of wildlife. Srithanu beach has calm waters and caters to high-end resorts.

    Bottle Beach

Bottle Beach in the north is a secluded stretch of sand and quite difficult to reach so it is never overcrowded. You can hike there in under 2 hours (not for beginners), drive steep and at times dangerous roads or take a boat there from Chalok Lam beach. There is a resort carrying the same name and it has its private beach as well.
