The Full Moon Party has been called the Number 1 Party in Asia, featuring the now-famous Buckets service, a bucket full of moderate liquor combined with energy drinks. This event was started in the mid-1980s by tourists who felt that they saw the most beautiful moon at Koh Pha Ngan and decided to arrange a party in Haad Rin Beach to celebrate the night of the full moon. Since then, it has become a regular activity that now counts 10,000-30,000 revellers monthly. As the full moon rises, the mood escalates to a full dance and music vibe, the music from all genres satisfying everyone, with jugglers, fire-eaters and a fireworks display, the frenetic energy dies down only as the moon rests to let in the sun.
Koh Pha Ngan might seem more expensive than other Thailand destinations, but there are ways to actually have a fun and enjoyably satisfying stay in Koh Pha Ngan. Getting there is the biggest hurdle. Coming from other countries of Asia and the rest of the world, the travel costs would take the biggest chunk of the budget. Once in Koh Pha Ngan, one can find quite affordable but comfortable and even luxurious accommodations. The cost of living is not high, too. From three days to a week or longer, one can take the opportunity of experiencing this tropical beauty of nature.
Koh Pha Ngan is said to be a very safe place to visit. Dangers, accidents and misfortunes usually arise from irresponsible behaviour, carelessness, lack of preparation or prudence. Motorbike accidents are quite often, and guests do not lack reminders and notices for caution like wearing a helmet, no drunk driving, being alert for coconuts, sand and water on the road and no speeding. Travellers and guests are cautioned about the use of drugs because of the island’s reputation for this vice for a time. It is not tolerated nowadays and the government has implemented harsher penalties and even jail time. Trekking and rock climbing are advised to be done with a guide. Theft and petty robbery are uncommon on Koh Pha Ngan. Otherwise, with all things considered, Koh Pha Ngan is safe to visit and enjoy for a few days to several weeks.
Koh Pha Ngan weather has three classifications: the short monsoon season, the dry season and the hot season characterized by frequent rain showers. The dry season from December to March is Koh Pha Ngan’s tourist season. The weather is hot and bright and not quite humid, which is perfect for sun-lovers. March to around September, humidity is high and rains are frequent but short-lived. This would be the best time for budget travellers. September to November is not safe on an island because of the flooding and winds that disrupt connections.
Ferry boats crisscross between Koh Samui, Suratthani and Koh Pha Ngan. It takes 2 1/2 hours from Surat Thani to Koh Pha Ngan and 45 minutes from Koh Samui. A shorter alternative is the speedboat, which takes only 20 minutes from Samui to Pha Ngan, although that would cost higher.
Koh Phangan (or Koh Pha Ngan) is famous for its monthly Full Moon Party at the crescent-shaped Haad Rin Beach. Since its beginning in the mid-1980s, it now attracts up to 30,000 guests from all over the globe. Koh Phangan is smaller than Koh Samui and has no airport so the only transport to and from are the ferries. Despite the surge of tourists for the Full Moon Party, Koh Pha Ngan is generally very quiet, with some amazing sceneries and not as touristy as Koh Samui. There are many luxury hotels, boutique hotels, beach resorts and budget accommodation options too, which offer the basic amenities and features for a comfortable stay, including free cancellation policies. Meals are delicious with many fresh choices, with a market accessibly right in the town. Koh Pha Ngan’s beaches are short of spectacular and give travellers a feeling of bliss in paradise. Many roads are still unpaved but this condition adds to a feeling of authenticity in Koh Pha Ngan. Most accommodations, restaurants and beaches are within reach. The other half of the island is as yet less developed and untouched but still has a few beautiful beaches and good restaurants to please one’s spirit and palate. Koh Samui is Thailand’s second-largest island, next to Phuket. It is among the islands of the Ang Thong National Marine Park which is a marine paradise where swimming, snorkelling and kayaking are the regular activities The island has long had a reputation as a honeymoon hotspot and so can offer more choices on where to stay, with a lot of free cancellation options, too. It has some amazing beaches, but its popularity causes crowded or busy beaches where a relaxed bask in the sun would be difficult to attain. Food choices are varied and numerous but tourist-priced, except for the weekly food markets in some areas where mouth-watering dishes can be had at cheaper costs. F0r a laid back and relaxed vacation, Koh Pha Ngan wins over Samui, thumbs down. There are small towns with interesting restaurants and bars, however small, giving the island a quaint character. There is none of the hustle and bustle of touristy places. The beautiful beaches are mostly clean with soft sandy shores. Many a hotel or resort in Koh Pha Ngan were made to blend with or complement the surrounding jungle and greenery, making for an authentic tropical getaway. A bucket list to unwind and relax will always have Koh Pha Ngan in the itinerary, and Koh Samui for hectic day-and-night activities.
